The quote is about paying taxes to fund immoral wars but its sentiment is broader--to include disobeying all immoral acts done by the government. This American transcendental anarchism functions as a democratic counterbalance to the republican partisans (of all parties) with a monopoly on violence and the power of the purse. Thoreau's non-violent resistance was successfully adapted by Gandhi, Mandela and MLK against their particular apartheid states. Today's surveillance panopticon is a prison for "all just men" and "the State" has been at war more often than not since "Civil Disobedience" was written--funded by taxes and staffed by volunteers.
To shift between Thoreau's pond based anarchism and the modern military-industrial-corporate-complex would require an Allison CD-850-6A Cross drive, Single stage transmission with three gears (two FFs and a R). The pictured tank has one--a M60A3 fully tracked, main assault vehicle in front of the Peplin VFW Post 8280 near Kronenwetter (WI).
